“I squeeze my eyes shut, worried that he’s going to see my whole heart in them”

Book Description

Down on her luck with no job and a boyfriend who left her for his pregnant girlfriend. Clementine Monroe (Clemmie) is left to pick up the pieces of her life and start afresh. When her sisters visit to cheer her up Clemmie sees no fault in taking up their suggestion to bring back a little magic from their childhood, they named the break-up spell.

From there Clemmie’s world turns upside down in more ways than one. Now she’s found herself stuck in a job babysitting a world-famous musician who she can’t keep thinking about and who can’t keep thinking about her. Will she be able to heal from her past and learn to take a risk on love or will she let this newfound love slip past her?

Throw in some drama with her ex-boyfriends and childhood wounds left unhealed by her unreliable rock star Dad, Clemmie is in for one hell of a summer.

Review

After reading The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood, I didn’t think I’d find anything half as good so soon but boy was I wrong. I whizzed through this book so fast, the slow-burn romance, the sisterly love and the witty humour are top-notch, and I couldn’t have been more pleased that I chose this as my next read!

Clemmie was a refreshing character to read. Compared to her sisters who are both in the music business like their father, one a folk singer and another a successful record producer, Clemmie is a bookworm who chose the path of academics instead. She’s determined to live her life opposite of her irresponsible rock star dad. From her dad to her teenage ex, it’s safe to say that her experiences with people in the music scene are traumatic, to say the least.

So, to avoid any triggers Clemmie has led a typical responsible yet dull life with no room for anything wild, spontaneous or exciting. But after performing a nostalgic magical ritual with her fellow Weird Sisters, everything changes…

I enjoyed seeing her come out of her shell, as you read on you get to see her become more confident and comfortable in her skin and I loved every moment of it. It felt like she was reclaiming her power from the people in her life who made her feel unworthy and unloved. In that sense, the character felt similar to Delphie from The Love of My Afterlife, which is probably why I polished this book off as fast as I did.

I have to say the writing was amazing. Laura Wood did a great job of keeping the pace of the story going, everything flowed nicely. There were no long chapters or paragraphs filled with unnecessary information. It had just the perfect amount of everything from the details about Clemmie’s family to her memories that haunted her, even down to the heart-warming slow-burn romance. I was engrossed from the start. Even though the heart of the story is cliché like most rom-coms, the writer added so much depth and emotion that I couldn’t wait to see how it all unfolded.

The true stars of the book were The Witchy Weird Sisters! (Clemmie, Serena and Lil). Their distinct personalities balanced each other beautifully resulting in an entertaining and enviable bond that I could never get enough of. They’re not just sisters but best friends. I’m most definitely going to miss reading their interactions the most.

Final Thoughts

If it isn’t obvious, this book is well worth the read. I encourage all my fellow book lovers, especially romance enthusiasts to pick up a copy!
