How to Turn Reading into a Daily Habit

Reading is a magical journey that can transport us to different worlds, expand our knowledge, and ignite our imagination. However, in the hustle and bustle of daily life, it can be challenging to find time for this enriching activity. But fear not! In this blog post, we’ll explore practical strategies to turn reading into a daily habit, allowing you to experience the joys of literature regularly.

Why Reading is Important

Before we dive into the tips, let’s first understand why reading is essential. As famed author Stephen King once said, “Books are a uniquely portable magic.” Books have the power to open our minds and hearts to new ideas and perspectives, educate us on different cultures and societies, and inspire us to chase our dreams. Reading also improves our cognitive abilities, memory, and vocabulary while reducing stress levels. Therefore, developing a reading habit can have significant positive impacts on our personal and professional lives.

Change Your Mindset

The first step to cultivating a reading habit is to change your mindset. Rather than viewing reading as a chore or obligation, embrace it as a pleasurable escape. Treat it as a time to unwind, relax, and nourish your mind.

Thinking of reading as a job or obligation can be counterproductive when trying to nurture a daily reading habit. This mindset often creates pressure and eliminates the joy and relaxation that are inherent to the reading experience. As a result, reading becomes a chore rather than a pleasurable activity, leading to resistance and lack of commitment. It’s your journey to unknown realms, a quiet conversation with authors, and an opportunity to walk in the shoes of diverse characters. When you begin to look at reading as an enriching experience rather than a duty, you’ll naturally find yourself drawn to it.

It’s essential to perceive reading as a leisurely pursuit, a chance to escape, learn and grow. By transforming our perspective on reading from a task to a treat, we can sustain the habit more easily and look forward to our daily reading.

Choosing the Right Books and Where to Find Them

One key to developing a reading habit is selecting books that genuinely interest you. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, self-help, or fantasy, find genres or authors that captivate your attention. When you’re excited about what you’re reading, it becomes easier to make time for it.

Choosing the right books is crucial for cultivating a healthy reading habit. It’s like laying the groundwork for a building; if the foundation is strong and well-placed, everything else falls into place more easily. If you choose books that interest you and that are suitable for your reading level, you are more likely to enjoy the process and stick with it.

On the other hand, if you pick books that are too complex or outside your area of interest, you may find the reading process laborious or even off-putting, potentially derailing your efforts to form a daily reading habit. In essence, the right books can serve as a gateway to an enriching world of knowledge and imagination, making the journey of turning reading into a daily habit a much more enjoyable and rewarding one.

If you’re struggling with where to start you can spend time browsing the bookshelves of your local library or bookshop, checking out what they have to offer is always a great approach that allows for a fun day out. Explore different genres– from mysteries, thrillers, and romances, to biographies, sciences, and historical novels. Utilize book recommendations from friends, and online reviews, or join a book club. However, if you’re strapped for time a quick online search is definitely for you, you’ll find other sites containing book lists filled with popular authors and recommended new books that you are sure to enjoy reading.

If It’s Not Interesting Put it Down

One of the most significant hindrances in cultivating a daily reading habit is getting stuck on a book that doesn’t resonate with you. If you find yourself struggling through every page, it might be time to reconsider your choice. No rule states you must finish reading every book you start. In fact, forcing yourself to read a book you find boring can make the habit feel like a burden rather than a fun activity. It’s perfectly fine to put down a book if it doesn’t hold your interest. Remember, the goal is to build a habit and develop a love for reading, and that means finding books that genuinely grab your attention.

Once it feels like a job it’s time to change it up.  But don’t let a few pages be the determining factor, give it some time to see if it grows on you.  You can usually tell from the first two or three chapters whether you’re willing to continue or not.

Keep a Book with You at All Times

One of the simplest yet most effective strategies is to always have a book with you. Make use of spare moments during the day, such as waiting for appointments or commuting, to dive into a few pages. These pockets of time can quickly add up and make a significant difference in your reading progress.

Carrying a book with you at all times is a subtle yet powerful strategy for nurturing a reading habit. It turns idle moments into opportunities for exploration and learning. Waiting in line, commuting, or lunch breaks becomes a chance to delve into a story, acquire knowledge, or broaden your perspectives.

This constant accessibility to a book creates an environment conducive to reading, enabling you to use your time more productively and habitually engage with literature. Consequently, the act of reading transitions from a deliberate choice to a natural part of your daily routine, thus cultivating a lifelong reading habit.

Read on Public Transport

In this day and age where technology is so accessible the idea of reading a book whilst traveling can often take a back seat. Games, music and even movies in most instances are the go-to sources of entertainment. That may have been the case for you but not any more! To develop a habit you have to be willing to make sacrifices with your time and this is a small but ultimately beneficial one.

If you’re a student or a professional who commutes via public transport, this is an excellent opportunity to get lost in a book. Back when I was a young teen in school, I lived an hour away by bus. To make the most of this time, I always carried a book with me. This allowed me to finish several books every month, and this habit has stayed with me ever since. Trust me, time flies when you put your phone away, open a book and start reading!

Create a Conducive Reading Environment

Designate a comfortable space in your home where you can immerse yourself in reading. Creating a reading nook can help signal to your brain that it’s time to relax and dive into the world of books.

Make it cosy with a soft blanket, a comfortable chair, and good lighting. Grab a little bookshelf and fill it up with interesting books that you enjoy and more books from your reading list that you’ll love to read next. Cut down on distractions by turning off your phone or keeping it in another room. to help you focus.

You can get a wide range of inspiration to make this as bright and comfortable as you want by searching online and looking on websites like Pinterest for example. Forming a little reading corner designed for you makes reading extremely satisfying, encouraging you to pick up a book in your free time and schedule reading.

Remember it doesn’t have to be anything elaborate, sitting in your favourite chair with a nice hot drink can be just as helpful. A conductive reading environment can be made anywhere as long as it works for you.

Use Technology to Aid Reading

If carrying physical books is not always practical, consider using different formats like e-readers or reading apps on your phone or tablet. These devices allow you to store multiple books in one place, making it convenient to switch between titles. Plus, you can adjust the font size, highlight passages, and even access a dictionary at your fingertips. A popular choice for example is Amazon Kindle, it comes in the form of both a tablet and an app for your convenience.

Reading books has never been easier. In this advanced techno-savvy world having a physical book is not the only way to read so no excuses!

Don’t forget it’s important to minimize digital distractions. If you’re reading on a device, try using apps that block out distracting notifications. Making your reading time a tranquil, personal retreat can dramatically enhance your reading experience.

Start Small and Gradually Increase Reading Time

Don’t feel pressured to read for hours at a time when starting a reading habit. Begin with just 10 to 15 minutes each day and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable. you can even start with the first chapter or even one page depending on what you can handle.

What you don’t want to do is jump the gun and force yourself to read too much too fast and inevitably be put off by the whole experience. It’s much more sustainable to develop a reading habit slowly and consistently.

Consistency is key, so aim for a realistic reading goal that fits into your schedule. Even on busy days when you can’t manage to read a page, don’t stop reading. Every word counts. Having said that if you come across a juicy book that you can’t put down, don’t limit yourself. Keep going until your heart’s content.

Importance of Enjoyment

Reading consistently is ten times easier when you choose books you genuinely enjoy. Don’t be afraid to explore various genres and authors until you find what resonates with you. Remember, reading is meant to be an enjoyable experience, so embrace the pleasure of getting lost in a good book.

By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you can transform reading into a cherished habit. Remember, it’s not about the number of pages you read or the speed at which you finish a book. What matters most is the joy, knowledge, and inspiration that reading brings into your life. So, grab a book, find a cosy spot, and embark on your reading journey today!

You can also celebrate milestones, like completing a certain number of books or reading for a set amount of time. There are several book-tracking apps and websites where you can log your reads, share reviews, and interact with other readers.

Don’t forget to reward yourself when you meet your reading goals. Becoming an avid reader is something to be proud of. Whether it’s treating yourself to a new book, a favourite dessert, or a day out, celebrating milestones makes the journey enjoyable and motivates you to stick to the habit.

Conclusion

Remember, the purpose of reading is not just about finishing books; it’s about growing, learning, and enjoying the journey.
